Electric Outdoor Garden Lighting Summary

Of all the lighting sources to choose from, electric garden lighting is by far the most convenient when installed properly. It is easy to use, and is often used as a theft deterrent. With do-it-yourself research, you can possibly even install the wiring yourself, although I wouldn‘t recommend it.

At the beginning of time, there was candlelight, and gas lighting. The horrible smell of rancid animal fat candles led the lighting industry, which was later replaced by gas. However, gas still did not alleviate the problem of unpleasant burning orders and thick burning smoke. Today, we have electricity, and those problems are solved!

According to the Institute of Engineering and Technology, “Michael Faraday established the principle of electromagnetic induction in 1831 which led eventually to electric generators that could produce electricity in large quantities at a modest cost. On this discovery scientists were able to experiment with electricity and lighting,” and decorative garden lighting was born.

If you connect a couple of pieces of carbon to an electric source, let them touch, and then drag them away from each other slowly, white heat is being built in the space between the carbon. This is called a spark, or an arc. This was the first type of outdoor lighting invented, and was the only electric lighting source until the 1870’s. People used arc lighting to illuminate large outdoor spaces, such as train stations, and festivals.

Compared to gas, low voltage garden lighting was expensive, so many people couldn’t afford it. Once the kinks were worked out regarding the filament lamp invention in 1911, rich people could finally buy power. It would be another 15 years before the government would step in to pass the Electricity Supply Act of 1926. This Act basically divided up the electricity stations, so that everyone could have access to it. The national electricity grid was born.

Today, there are thousands of types of outdoor garden lighting available to compliment the latest deck designing software. New sources include solar garden lighting and led garden lighting. All of which were inspired by Michael Faraday’s principles. Almost everyone can afford power now, and most are taking advantage by illuminating their gardens and landscaping.
